Free Sample Edit or Consultation

If you know you want a line edit, submit a 1000 word sample from your manuscript for a sample edit. If you know you want a developmental edit, schedule a call with me so we can talk about your goals and see if we're a good match.

If you're not sure, book a call and we can chat!

Developmental Editing

Developmental Editing is focused on the "big picture" of your work. Provides feedback and guidance on overall structure, pacing, character development, world building, and narrative cohesion. Provides specific and detailed suggestions for addressing issues.

Best for: A complete or mostly complete but unpolished manuscript.

Preparation: Before paying for professional editing, I strongly encourage you to share your writing with a writing group or partner.

Deliverables:

  • Pre- and post-editorial feedback meetings
  • Manuscript with in-text comments
  • Editorial Letter with detailed overview of feedback and suggestions (5-15 pages, depending on manuscript length)

Introductory rate*: 1 cent per word

Line Editing

Line editing focuses on the line- and paragraph-level writing. Focuses on improving flow, clarity, word choice, dialogue, and pacing within chapters or scenes. If you are struggling with word count (too high or too low), this can be addressed in line editing. While I do include copy edits (corrections to grammar, spelling, and usage) as I see them, line editing does not take the place of copy editing to catch all errors, since this edit is still focused on style.

Best for: A complete manuscript whose structure you feel confident in; manuscripts that need help with word count.

Preparation: A developmental edit or working with other writers or readers to help you solidify your structure. I recommend self-editing as much as possible, using a grammar and spell checker as well as a self-editing checklist before submitting to a line edit. You manuscript should be as clean as you can make it.

Deliverables:

  • Pre- and post-editorial feedback meetings
  • Manuscript with in-text revisions and some comments
  • Editorial Letter with overview of feedback and suggestions (3-6 pages)

Introductory rate*: 1 cent per word

Editorial Sample Platter

Not sure what kind of editing you need? Want more in-depth feedback on a larger selection of text, but you're not sure what developmental or line edits will look like? Send me the first 2-5 chapters of your book (3000-6000 words) and schedule a consultation with me to discuss my recommendations. The price of the consultation can be applied to any editing services you book afterwards.

Best for: When you're not sure what you need, but want a more in-depth consultation than a sample edit.

Deliverables:

  • 30 minute Pre-edit meeting
  • Manuscript mark up with sample line edits and developmental comments
  • Editorial letter (1-2 pages)
  • 30 minute post-edit meeting

Introductory Rate*: $100

*Introductory rates notice: My prices are very low right now as I am building my business, since I know it's a risk to work with a new editor. However, as I build clients, my rates will rise to be more in line with the median rates for freelance editors, as collated by the Editorial Freelancers Association. I expect I will raise my rates by the beginning of 2027.
